Metro Tunnel

About the project

By taking our busiest train lines through a new tunnel under the city, the Metro Tunnel will free up space in the City Loop to run more trains in and out of the city.

That means more trains, more often across Victoria, with a less crowded and more reliable train network.

Delivery

The Metro Tunnel includes five new underground stations, with two new city stations directly connected to Flinders Street and Melbourne Central. View answers to frequently asked questions about the project.

Construction works will be delivered through a series of work packages.

Benefits

New High Capacity Trains will run through the Metro Tunnel, freeing up more trains across the Melbourne rail network. See how Metro Tunnel will benefit your rail line

More trains also means fewer cars on the roads, helping to tackle congestion in our suburbs. These are some of the many benefits Metro Tunnel brings to Victoria.

Planning approvals

Metro Tunnel is fully funded and has been assessed under an Environment Effects Statement (EES) process. Construction is now underway. Find out about works in your area.

Jobs

The project is being delivered by the Melbourne Metro Rail Authority (MMRA). MMRA is committed to growing our team to meet the evolving challenges and demands of the project.
