Works ramp up in the CBD
City Square closed to the public last week, with hoardings now installed around the site. Part of the Burke and Wills statue will be carefully removed this week and will be placed in storage while a new underground station is built. The remainder of the monument will be removed in late April to increase footpath space on Swanston Street while works are underway.
Meanwhile, piling rigs are getting to work in the CBD North precinct as part of preparations to excavate the 11 storey deep shaft at Franklin Street.
The Minister for Planning has approved the John Holland Early Works Plan, paving the way for demolition of the City Square car park, shaft excavation at Franklin and A'Beckett streets, tree protection and removal and further service relocations.
