Domain Station

A new station in Domain will significantly improve access to the St Kilda Road precinct and key Melbourne landmarks, reducing pressure on the road and tram network to the south of the CBD.

A new underground station in Domain will be an important interchange between train and tram services on St Kilda Road.

Materials such as bluestone, granite and timber have been carefully selected as part of the station's design to reflect the surrounding parkland and the Shrine of Remembrance.

A feature skylight will bring natural light into the station concourse and a spacious pedestrian underpass, which will include retail outlets and art installations. The station will sit below a new train-tram interchange, featuring a floating timber canopy to protect passengers from the elements.

Improving access to trains and trams

The new station in Domain is strategically placed to ease pressure on the St Kilda Road / Swanston Street tram corridor, which is the busiest tram corridor in the world and currently experiencing significant crowding issues. It will feature a convenient, direct train / tram interchange within a new tram super stop on St Kilda Road.

The new station will serve thousands of people destined for the employment and residential precinct along St Kilda Road every day, and support the continuing growth and redevelopment of the South Melbourne / Kings Way precinct.

It will also make it easier to visit some of Melbourne's most valued parks and attractions such as the Shrine of Remembrance, the Royal Botanic Gardens and Albert Park.

Station location and access

The new station will be located directly under St Kilda Road near the intersection of Albert Road and Domain Road.

The Metro Tunnel will travel from the new underground station at the southern end of Swanston Street under the Yarra River, CityLink, Domain Parklands and St Kilda Road and arrive at Domain Station. It then curves towards Toorak Road before exiting the tunnel at South Yarra and joining the existing Cranbourne / Pakenham line.

Entry points

The station will be accessed from four entry points. One entrance is located on the outer edge of the Shrine of Remembrance grounds, another at the Albert Road Reserve and two further entrances are provided at the new train/tram interchange directly above the station on St Kilda Road.

Access between the new tram stop at street level and the station platforms will be provided via escalators, stairs and lifts. The station entrances have been positioned to create a public walkway underneath busy St Kilda Road, improving pedestrian safety and convenience.

Platform screen doors will be installed to provide increased safety and security, less train noise, and better climate control.

Increasing public open space

As part of works to build the new station in Domain, Albert Road Reserve will be expanded, landscaped and upgraded to become a new community park.

Most of the existing elm trees within Albert Road Reserve will be retained, including the Windsor Oak, and new native species will be planted to increase the overall number of trees in the Reserve.

The result will be 4500 square metres of new public space that links some of Melbourne's most popular parks - Albert Park, the Shrine of Remembrance grounds and the Royal Botanic Gardens.
