To facilitate construction of CBD North Station, part of Franklin Street between Victoria and Swanston streets will be closed to traffic for around five years from early 2017.
In preparation for this temporary but extended closure, Victoria Street will undergo some changes to allow more traffic to flow more efficiently through the city.
The increased capacity created on Victoria Street will provide suitable alternative routes once Franklin Street is closed.
What the works will involve
The works will involve parallel parking bays along Victoria Street eastbound between Leicester and Nicholson Streets from two hour parking to 'No Stopping' from 7am to 9.30am on weekdays.
The works will also involve:
- Line marking to identify the new design of the road way
- Changes to traffic signage along Victoria Street
- Upgrades to traffic signalling timing.
What to be aware of
There will be short-term, temporary changes to vehicle and bicycle access Variable Message Signs (VMS) boards will be in place to provide clear direction.
Traffic management will be in place to ensure the safety of work crews and pedestrians and maintain traffic flow
When the works will take place
Construction hours are
- 7am – 6pm, Monday to Friday
- 7am – 1pm, Saturdays
Night work may be required for permanent line marking. This work is expected to take place in late January 2017.
Alternative off-street parking and public transport
Metered and paid off-street car parking options are available along Victoria Street. The Route 57 tram operates along Victoria Street between Elizabeth and Swanston streets.
