Major works on the Metro Tunnel are underway to support construction of a CBD underground station with direct connections to Flinders Street Station.
City Square closed to the public on 3 April 2017 and early works are underway. These works will prepare the site for construction of the new CBD South Station and the City Square entrance.
In order to safely and efficiently build this station, we will need to temporarily occupy City Square for up to five years. An acoustic shed will be built over the site in 2018.
When the project is complete, City Square will be returned to the City of Melbourne as public open space, with an entrance to the new station underneath.
What we are doing
Removal of artwork
Removal of the Beyond the Ocean of Existence sculpture (corner of Flinders Lane and Swanston) and the Burke and Wills monument on Swanston Street will take place between late April and mid-May. Site set up for these works will occur out of hours to avoid impacts on Swanston Street trams and will involve the use of a crane.
The Swanston Street footpath adjacent to City Square will be closed to the public during these works and a lane closure will be in place on Collins Street. Traffic management will be in place to assist pedestrian movement in the area.
All efforts will be made to reduce impacts from these works, however they are expected to produce medium-high levels of noise.
Removal of public street furniture
Street furniture including plant boxes, lighting and bluestone in City Square will be removed over the coming weeks. This will include plant boxes, lighting and bluestone.
This work is expected to have a minor noise impact and will take place within the site.
Trees have been removed from City Square to facilitate construction of the new underground station.
Where possible, timber from the removed trees will be re-used by City of Melbourne. Some mulching will take place on site.
We will replant two trees for every tree we remove on the project to enhance long term canopy cover.
Brunetti Café closing
Brunetti Café has closed their City Square store. The demolition of the former Brunetti building will start in early May and will take up to one week. These works are expected to produce medium to high levels of noise. A new Brunetti Café will be opening on 1 August 2017 at 250 Flinders Lane.

What to be aware of
Traffic management will be in place during construction to maintain the flow of traffic and ensure the safety of work crews and pedestrians.
Some construction equipment will need to be ferried in to site overnight to minimised impacts to pedestrians and traffic.
There may be some noise and dust associated with these works. Mitigation strategies which comply with Metro Tunnel's Environmental Performance Requirements (EPRs) will be put in place to minimise disruption to the community.
