West Footscray station and tracks

What Melbourne Metro means for West Footscray

To get the most out of the new underground rail line and the relief it will provide to crowding, works will be undertaken at West Footscray to create the ability for some Sunbury bound services to turn around.

These works will enable trains to terminate and commence services at West Footscray station.

The exact timing of these works is yet to be confirmed but they will happen sometime during Melbourne Metro's major construction phase, from 2018 onwards.

Commuters and the local community will be given plenty of advance notice prior to the works starting.

Work location and features

Works at West Footscray station involve realigning regional, suburban and freight tracks, construction of new tracks and turnouts (to enable trains to change direction), a new passenger platform and alterations to the existing station concourse. No works are required on private land.

West Footscray station currently has an island platform and services the Sunbury line. Freight and regional passenger services also operate through the station.

The additional platform and track to the north of the station (Cross Street side) will service city bound trains coming from Sunbury in the morning and afternoon peak periods. The existing platform one will be used for trains travelling from the city to terminate and commence services at West Footscray station. This will assist trains to run on time and reduce delays.

Providing an additional platform and length of track for Sunbury line trains will also facilitate an increase in the number of services at West Footscray station during the morning and afternoon peak.

It is not anticipated that metropolitan trains will be stabled at West Footscray.

Managing construction

Track and station work would likely be conducted in stages to limit disruption to commuters and the local community.

Construction works may create noise, dust and vibration typical of a construction site. Melbourne Metro Rail Authority (MMRA) and its appointed construction contractors will be required to minimise and manage noise, dust and vibration impacts to comply with Environment Protection Authority (EPA), local council and other requirements.

With construction taking place in the rail corridor, there will be some disruption to rail services so these works can be undertaken safely. Bus replacement services will be provided should trains not be able to run during works.

There may also be temporary impacts to station car parking on the Cross Street side of the station during construction. Traffic management plans will be put in place around the precinct for the safety of construction workers, station and road users, and the local community. In addition to community and key stakeholder consultation, traffic impact assessments and site investigations are being carried out as part of the planning process to identify how impacts can be reduced and best managed.

Construction timeframes

The timing of works at West Footscray station will be after major construction works on Melbourne Metro commence in 2018 and prior to project completion in 2026. Station users and the local community will be notified in advance of any works commencing.
