Metro Tunnel

Transforming public transport above and below ground

About this video

The Metro Tunnel will transform public transport above and below ground in Melbourne. The Metro Tunnel will create a new way to travel underground through the city relieving pressure on trams along Swanston Street and St Kilda Road.

The Metro Tunnel Project will build new tram connections allowing trams to spread out across the city, catering for growing demand in the Docklands precinct and northern and western suburbs.

To build the Metro Tunnel, Domain Road needs to be temporarily closed. Trams that currently use Domain Road will be re-routed to Toorak Road West. Work on the Toorak Road West connection will begin next year.

From mid 2017, PTV will combine he 8 and 55 trams to create route 58. Trams will run down Toorak Road West to St Kilda Road. Trams will turn at Park Street (South Melbourne), run along Kings Way to William Street, and then to West Coburg. Route 6 will also be extended from Melbourne University to Moreland to service the busy Lygon Street precinct.
