A number of sites and locations along the Metro Tunnel are places of heritage significance.

In some cases, these sites are registered on the Victorian Heritage Register and require a heritage permit to be granted before works are undertaken.

Locations

Flinders Street Station and Campbell Arcade

The new Town Hall Station will have a direct underground connection to Flinders Street Station via Campbell Arcade. Flinders Street Station, including Campbell Arcade and the Degraves Street Subway, is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.

The design of the underground connection, known as Flinders Link, has changed since the Town Hall Station (CBD South) Development Plan was approved by the Minister for Planning in 2018. The updated design will preserve the original 1950s shopfronts and tilework of Campbell Arcade and install lifts from the Degraves Street Subway to platforms 1-10 at Flinders Street Station.

A heritage permit has been provided by Heritage Victoria for these works.

Federation Square

Federation Square has been nominated for inclusion on the Victorian Heritage Register by the National Trust. Heritage Victoria has made a recommendation to the Heritage Council that it should be added to the Victorian Heritage Register.

An Interim Protection Order (IPO) has been placed by Heritage Victoria on Federation Square. Cross Yarra Partnership has received a permit exemption from Heritage Victoria for initial site establishment works at Federation Square including fencing and DDA ramps.
