Upgrades to the Metro rail network

A range of upgrades are needed on the Sunbury, Cranbourne and Pakenham lines for the extra capacity created by the Metro Tunnel and its new High Capacity Metro Trains.

Four tunnel boring machines (TBMs) that will build the project’s twin 9km tunnels have been ordered.

Each 100 metres long, they will move underneath the city surface burrowing through the soil and rock and installing the concrete segments of the Metro Tunnel.

Works to realign the traffic, tram and bicycle lanes on St Kilda Road took place in April 2018. These works allowed us to establish the construction site for the new Anzac Station in the centre of St Kilda Road, while ensuring road and tram users can continue to use St Kilda Road and travel on public transport while construction takes place.

More than 600,000 cubic metres of concrete will be used across the Metro Tunnel Project, most of which will be sourced from Victorian quarrying materials, with 50,000 concrete segments to line the project’s twin 9 kilometre tunnels.

The Extractive Resources Strategy will strengthen Victoria’s quarry sector, to ensure a steady supply of materials to the building industry and support projects such as the Metro Tunnel.

RAILway artwork at City Square

A submission from renowned Melbourne artist Peter Atkins has been selected for display on the construction hoardings at City Square on Swanston St.

Peter's artwork, RAILway, is a project that explores collective cultural, social and personal narratives to the graphic, abstracted designs of suburban train tickets issued between 1920 and the late 1980s that departed from or arrived into Melbourne.
