Metro Tunnel

Progress on Arden Station

Posted: 20 Sep 2018

Excavation of the station box is underway in North Melbourne preparing for the launch of the Metro Tunnel’s first tunnel boring machine.

The ‘station box’ is the excavated space that the finished station will occupy including the platforms, concourse and station amenities.

It will be long enough to accommodate platforms more than 225 metres long to cater for longer trains in the future.

Once the station box is excavated, a concrete slab will be poured at its base. From next year, the first TBM will be lowered into the station box, assembled then launched towards Kensington to start building the first nine-kilometre tunnel.

Arden Station will kickstart a transformation of the area from an industrial precinct to a new suburb with a mix of residential, retail and business uses.
