Tunnel Boring Machine names

Posted: 09 Sep 2018

We want your help to name our tunnel boring machines (TBMs).

TBMs are large machines that tunnel through ground, progressively installing concrete linings to support the excavated tunnel. They are tailored for specific ground conditions. The Metro Tunnel TBMs will be 100 metres long, weighing up to 1,000 tonnes and have a diameter of 7.2 metres.

A state-wide competition is underway, inviting Victorians to name the TBMs that will construct the Metro Tunnel and the West Gate Tunnel.

Six winners will be chosen and invited onto a Metro Tunnel or West Gate Tunnel worksite next year to watch as the TBM they named is assembled.

Tunnelling tradition dictates a TBM cannot start work until it has been given a female name, a sign of good luck for the project ahead – so the competition will seek suggestions that recognise inspiring or ground-breaking women, with a preference for Victorians.
