Milestone testing of high-tech train control system

After nearly three years of hard work and planning, Metro Tunnel Project has begun testing Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) for the first time ever in Melbourne.

This significant milestone will pave the way for High Capacity Signalling (HCS) on Melbourne’s rail network. HCS enables trains to automatically adjust their speed to maintain a safe distance from the train in front. The next-generation technology will replace Melbourne's existing control system on parts of the network. It will mean more trains, more often.

Stage 1 of CBTC testing involves around 100 low-risk test cases using a single train. These tests will occur over three months on the Mernda Line, resulting in some minor disruptions. We will move to testing CBTC on multiple trains in 2021.

HCS will be rolled out through the Metro Tunnel and on the forthcoming Sunbury to Cranbourne/Pakenham line, which is currently under construction as part of the Metro Tunnel Project.
