All four TBMs Tunnelling

Posted: 04 Jun 2020

All four tunnel boring machines (TBM) are now digging underneath Melbourne, with the launch of TBM Meg marking the start of peak tunnelling operations for the Metro Tunnel.

The blue TBM has been launched from the Arden Station site in North Melbourne, joining TBM Joan on her second leg of tunnel construction. The second leg for Joan and Meg is a 1.4km tunnel from Arden Station to Parkville.

After completing the first 1.2km stretch of tunnels from Arden to the western tunnel entrance in Kensington earlier this year, Joan and Meg were disassembled and returned to Arden Station to be reassembled for this next phase of tunnelling.

TBMs Millie and Alice were launched separately in April and May to dig the 1.7km tunnels between Anzac Station and the eastern entrance at South Yarra.

This is the first time that the four TBMs have been operating at the same time.
