First TBM blessed at North Melbourne
Posted: 15 Aug 2019
Ahead of tunnel boring machine (TBM) Joan launching from the future North Melbourne Station, a blessing ceremony was held to provide good luck and safety for the tunnelling workers
It is a longstanding tunnelling tradition that a statue of the patron saint of tunnelling, Saint Barbara, is blessed and then placed near the entrance of a tunnel prior to tunnelling commencing.
An Indigenous smoking ceremony was also conducted by the members of the Wurundjeri Council, followed by Father Anthony Bernal from St Mary’s in West Melbourne who blessed a statue of St Barbara.
