Metro Tunnel

Millie starts towards the CBD

Posted: 03 Dec 2020

A tunnel boring machine is prepared for relaunch underground.

On 3 December 2020, tunnel boring machine (TBM) Millie was relaunched towards the new Town Hall Station site in Melbourne’s CBD. This is the first westbound section of the Metro Tunnel that Millie will dig.

Previously, Millie had dug from Anzac Station to the tunnel's eastern entrance in South Yarra. For that section the TBM bored 1.7 kilometres of tunnel and laid 1,100 tunnel lining rings.

In September, TBM Millie broke through at South Yarra, and was then dismantled and transported back to the acoustic shed on St Kilda Road.

TBM Alice is now also being reassembled at Anzac Station and will be relaunched in early 2021 to dig in parallel to Millie.
