Metro Tunnel

TBM assembly begins

Posted: 05 Jun 2019

Pieces of Joan the TBM are being assembled at the bottom of our North Melbourne Station shaft, ahead of tunneling later this year.

The first pieces of the TBM have been craned into the future North Melbourne Station box, where our construction crews will assemble and test the machine. The TBM will be launched from this site towards the start of the Metro Tunnel in Kensington, excavating more than 100,000 cubic metres of rock and soil.

Joan the TBM is named after the first female premier of Victoria, Joan Kirner. Read up on her and our TBM namesakes on the Tunnel Boring Machine page.
