Construction on the Mernda line

The health and safety of our workers and the community is our key priority as we continue to deliver the Metro Tunnel Project, as is supporting physical distancing measures in line with current health advice.

We have strict protocols in place to protect the safety of our construction workforce, including enhanced industrial cleaning arrangements, provision of personal protective equipment and measures to reduce staff contact, including staggered shifts.

Before High Capacity Signalling is rolled out on the Cranbourne, Pakenham and Sunbury lines and in the Metro Tunnel, the new technology will be put through months of on-site testing and validation.

That testing site is on a 4.5km length of track on the Mernda line between Epping and South Morang stations. Specially equipped trains are scheduled to be on track for testing in the second half of 2020.

What's happening

March 2020

Between Epping and South Morang stations

Testing of next-generation High Capacity Signalling for the Metro Tunnel will occur along the Mernda line between Epping and South Morang stations during April 2020.

These works will occur from 7pm to 4am on:

  • Monday 13 April to Friday 17 April
  • Monday 20 April to Friday 24 April

Testing works will require the use of trains at night, when trains are not normally running. The trains will use sounding horns as required.

To ensure these works can take place safely, buses will replace trains at times on part of the Mernda line between Monday 13 April and Friday 24 April 2020. Visit the Public Transport Victoria website for details.

December 2019

Between Epping and South Morang stations

Testing of new trackside equipment and signalling technology will occur along the Mernda line between Epping and South Morang stations during December 2019.

These works will occur:

  • 24/7 from 7.30pm Tuesday 3 December to Thursday 12 December 2019.

The shared user path running alongside the rail line between Epping and South Morang stations will be closed to the public during these works.

Buses will replace trains on sections of the Mernda line during these works and for Level Crossing Removal Project works. Visit the Public Transport Victoria website for details.

Signage and traffic management will be in place to safely detour cyclists and pedestrians around the shared user path closures.

Use of portable petrol powered light towers will be required. Where possible they will be positioned to face away from residential properties.
