Construction on the Mernda line

Before High Capacity Signalling is rolled out on the Cranbourne, Pakenham and Sunbury lines and in the Metro Tunnel, it’s technology will be put through months of on-site testing and validation.

That testing site is on a 4.5km length of track on the Mernda line between Epping and South Morang stations. Specially equipped trains are scheduled to be on track for testing in the second half of 2020.

What's happening

November 2019

Between Epping and South Morang stations

New signalling cables required to run High Capacity Signalling will be installed and cable pulling will occur from Epping to South Morang stations during November 2019.

These works will occur:

  • 10pm to 6am, Sunday 3 November to Wednesday 13 November
  • 7am to 6pm, Wednesday 13 November to Friday 22 November
  • 7am to 1pm, Saturday 16 November.

To keep everyone safe, sections of the shared user path will be closed to the public while works are being completed. Traffic management and detours will be in place.

Excavation, drilling and rock breaking to install trackside equipment will occur in the rail corridor during November 2019.

These works will occur:

  • 24 hours, Friday 8 November to Monday 11 November
  • 24 hours, Friday 22 November to Monday 25 November

All rock breaking will stop by no later than 10pm. Cable pulling will continue through the night.

During these works the entire length of the shared user path from Epping to South Morang stations will be closed to the public. Traffic management and detours will be in place.

October to November 2019

Epping and South Morang stations

To facilitate safe access to the rail corridor and enable equipment and cabling to be installed safely, public access to the South Morang shared user path, between Darebin Creek Trail and Pindari Avenue, will be closed during November.

These works will occur:

  • 7am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.
  • 7am to 1pm, Saturdays.
  • 8pm to 6am, Thursday to Sunday.

Traffic management will be in place, day and night, to divert pedestrians and cyclists safely around the closed shared user path.

These works are expected to generate medium levels of noise.

August 2019 to November 2019

Epping Depot, 323 McDonalds Road, Epping and shared user path near Hendersons Creek

To support works related to High Capacity Signalling, a construction site will be established at McDonalds Road, Epping. Installing the foundations to enable to Relocatable Equipment Buildings and location cases will also occur during November 2019.

These works will occur:

  • 7am to 6pm, Sunday 3 November to to Friday 8 November
  • Ongoing

These works are expected to generate medium levels of noise.
