Arden precinct

Construction works are continuing at the site of the future North Melbourne Station throughout Octobber and include:

  • ongoing site establishment activities
  • D-wall construction
  • piling activities
  • station box excavation
  • surveying and sampling and testing of groundwater and soil.
  • Drainage clearing works

Drainage clearing works

Groundwater well testing Groundwater monitoring well pumping tests will continue at a number of wells within the site. Tests will run 24 hours a day, over a period of approximately two weeks at each location. Testing is expected to be complete by the end of October.

Station box excavation

Station box excavation is now expected to start in mid-September and will continue until mid-2019. Excavation will involve:

  • Using excavators to remove soil from the station box
  • Loading spoil onto trucks to remove it from site
  • Installing steel supports (struts) inside the excavated station box.
What to be aware of
  • These activities are expected to generate low to medium levels of noise
  • Up to 120 trucks per day are expected
  • Construction vehicles and trucks will access the site via Laurens and Arden streets
  • All trucks carrying excavated materials will be covered, and water carts will be used to minimise the spread of dust
  • Rumble grids are being installed to remove debris from the wheels of vehicles to minimise the spread of dirt on local roads
  • During overnight closures of the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail for drainage clearing works, cyclists are advised to detour via Arden Street and obey signage and traffic controllers in the area
  • Contractors working at the site will not be permitted to park on local roads. If you notice construction vehicles parking on local roads, please report the vehicle’s make, model and registration number to the Metro Tunnel Project Information Line on 1800 105 105 or via our contact form.

Work activities after 1pm on Saturdays will be restricted to the removal of pile foundations, D-wall excavation, piling, station box excavation and concrete pouring activities. After 1pm on Saturdays, all construction vehicles will enter and exit the site via Arden Street.

Out of hours works

From Wednesday 31 October until late 2018, installation of station box struts (to support the excavation of the box) will be undertaken from 10pm – 7am, Monday to Friday.  This is in addition to piling, D-wall and excavation works being undertaken until 10pm, Monday to Friday.

To late September

Footscray Road, West Melbourne

The northwest corner of the site at 542 Footscray Road (the former Melbourne Market site) will be used to store and assemble equipment and materials that will be used to support construction of the Metro Tunnel.

Works to prepare the site and construct new storage facilities will commence in late July 2018.

Upcoming works will involve:

  • Undertaking site investigations, including geotechnical drilling and soil sampling to understand ground conditions
  • Demolishing a number of buildings on the site
  • Modifications to buildings that are being retained within the site.
  • Installing perimeter fencing and gates
  • Installing signage and line marking throughout the site
  • Minor earthworks and asphalting
  • Removing overhead gantries at the site entrance
  • Connecting the site to new power and water sources.

There will be periods of loud noise associated with demolition and asphalting works. Other works are expected to generate low to medium
levels of noise.

The service lane adjacent to the site will be closed, and right turns from Footscray Road into the site will be prohibited, for two days during overhead gantry removal. Other site entry points will not be impacted by these works.

Arden work site

Works to remove some remaining pile foundations at the far western end of the station construction site are underway.

This activity will involve removing piles using a piling rig, creter crane, excavator and drum roller. Concrete grinding will occur during the pile removal process which is expected to generate intermittent periods of high level noise while some vibration might be experienced when the drum roller is in use.

These works will be undertaken from 7am to 6pm on weekdays and 7am to 5pm on Saturdays.
