Arden Station entrance construction

Arden Station site

Ongoing until late-2022

Works to occur in October and November will include:

  • Removal of sections of the station box diaphragm walls (D-walls) to prepare for station entrance structural works
  • Concrete pours for the entrance level slab and entrance walls
  • The last section of the station box will be poured and the remaining support strutting will then be removed
  • Erecting steel falsework to support the installation of the station entrance arches
  • Station entrance arches will begin to arrive to site and be installed in early October
  • A large crane will position the arch segments, which will then be grouted into place
  • Arch segments are oversized and trucks transporting them will be required to use Queensberry Street. This will mean approximately 15 trucks during the month of October will be required to use Queensberry Street to deliver these arches.
  • Installation of arches will continue until the end of November.

Normal construction hours

  • Installing internal wall linings
  • Rough in for mechanical, electrical and plumbing work continuing.

Normal construction hours

Tunnelling internal structure works

Arden Station site

Ongoing until late-2021

  • Works to construct the tunnel invert between Arden Station and Parkville Station are ongoing. The eastbound tunnel invert is complete, with works in westbound continuing
  • This involves pouring concrete within the tunnels in sections.
  • Cable trays, brackets, and walkways continue to be installed in the tunnels between Arden and Western Portal
  • Internal fitout works include installing infrastructure within the cross passages.

Normal construction hours

Platform level and over track exhaust (OTE) construction

Arden Station site

Ongoing until late-2021

  • Construction of the station platforms and OTE (tunnel ventilation) system will be finalised in early October
  • This involves using cranes and hand tools to install precast concrete units within the station box, and pouring concrete
  • Public stairs and escalators will begin to be installed in October.

Normal construction hours

Mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) services installation

Arden Station site

Ongoing until early-2022

Mechanical electrical and plumbing services will be installed to support the future operation of the tunnel. Works to occur in October and November will include:

  • Sprinkler and hydrant bracket and pipework installation
  • Gaseous suppression system pipework installation
  • Mechanical pipework and ductwork installation
  • Electrical cable tray and cable installation
  • Hydraulic pipework installation
  • Commencement of fire detection systems installation
  • First lift installation
  • These activities will involve the use of cranes for the loading of materials and various plant located within the station box
  • Works will be undertaken progressively throughout the coming year.

Utility investigation works

Arden Street, Barwise Street, Laurens Street, Queensberry Street

Ongoing until late-2021

  • Service investigations will be undertaken intermittently in Arden, Laurens, Barwise and Queensberry streets
  • This involves the use of non-destructive digging (NDD) trucks to locate underground services and then reinstating the road surface and line marking
  • These activities are expected to generate periods of medium to loud noise
  • These works may include intermittent impacts to traffic, footpaths and on-street parking. See the ‘traffic and transport impacts’ section for further information.

Normal construction hours

Utility installation works

Arden Street, Barwise Street, Laurens Street, Queensberry Street

October and November 2021

  • Installing new drainage lines between Arden Street and Queensberry Street
  • Installing watermain valve on Arden Street
  • Upgrading water main line on Queenberry Street westbound between Munster Terrace and Laurens Street
  • These works will require the temporary closure of sections of Barwise Street, Queensberry and Laurens Streets, as well as some lane closures along Arden Street
  • Further information will be provided to residents closer to the date.

24 hours

North Melbourne electrical substation construction

North Melbourne

Ongoing until late-2021

  • Service investigations using NDD trucks to locate underground services will be required intermittently as construction progresses. Site investigations and monitoring activities including survey and soil sampling are ongoing
  • Construction of the substation, including installation of cladding and internal fit out
  • Installation and testing of electrical systems and switch rooms
  • Construction of the cable route between the new substation and the Arden Station site involves installing conduits beneath the Upfield rail line using a methodology called pipe jacking. These works will occur within existing worksites and adjacent Metro Trains land and will not impact train services
  • Installation of a fire water service beneath the existing access track involving use of NDD trucks and an excavator. This may involve a minor detour for cyclists travelling between Arden Street and the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail at night. Further notification will be provided if this detour is required
  • Short holds of traffic on the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail will be required intermittently while large construction vehicles travel along the narrow section of the existing access track near Arden Street. Traffic controllers will be in place to direct cyclists and pedestrians.

Laurens Street realignment

In February 2021 until late 2023, Laurens Street will be realigned to enable service investigations and support construction of the Arden Station entrance.

The following changes will remain in place until 2023:

  • Closure of the western footpath on Laurens Street, from Arden Street to just south of Queensberry Street
  • Closure of on-street parking spaces on both sides of Laurens Street, from Arden Street to just south of Queensberry Street
  • Installation of an east/west pedestrian crossing on Laurens Street
  • Reduction of the current speed limit to 40 km/h
  • Installation of concrete barriers to delineate the site from road users.

Traffic and transport

  • Up to 150 trucks per day are expected to travel to and from site. Construction vehicles and trucks will access the site via Laurens and Arden streets, except for trucks transporting station entrance arches – due to their size, these will use Queensberry Street
  • All trucks carrying excavated materials will be covered, and water carts and street sweepers will be used frequently to minimise the spread of dust
  • Rumble grids and a wheel wash have been installed to remove debris from the wheels and carriages of vehicles to minimise the spread of dirt on local roads.

Utility investigation works

  • Utility investigations will involve the intermittent short-term closure of one lane on Arden, Laurens and Barwise streets. Traffic will be maintained in both directions via a shuttle flow arrangement
  • Some on-street parking spaces may be temporarily impacted on Arden, Barwise, Queensberry and Laurens streets
  • Sections of footpath adjacent to works may be temporarily closed, with local pedestrian diversions in place
  • Access to businesses will be maintained at all times
  • Signage and traffic controllers will be in place to direct vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians around the work area.

Utility installation works

  • Installing new drainage lines will require temporary closures on Arden Street, Laurens Street and Barwise Street. Local detours will be in place during these works
  • Upgrading the water main line on Queensberry Street will require the temporary closure of the westbound lane of Queensberry Street, between Munster Terrace and Laurens Street. A local detour will be place for duration of these works.
