Arden precinct work notifications

Work is now underway in the Arden Precinct to support construction of new North Melbourne Station.

From August until late- May 2020

Lothian Street

Ground improvement works are required on Lothian Street from late August to late-May 2020.

Traffic and pedestrian detours will be in place. Pedestrian access around the work site will be maintained at all times with signage and traffic controllers on site.

Ongoing

From North Melbourne towards Kensington

The project’s first TBM has commenced tunnelling from the site of the new North Melbourne Station towards Kensington. The second TBM will commence tunnelling in the near future, also from the site of the new North Melbourne Station towards Kensington

Tunnelling and the operation of associated support services, including the slurry treatment plant, grout pumps and segment facility, will occur 24 hours a day, seven days a week

These works will occur:

  • 24 hours, on an ongoing basis until early 2020.

Ongoing

Laurens, Barwise and Queensberry streets, North Melbourne

Service investigations will be undertaken in Laurens, Barwise and Queensberry streets until December 2019. This involves using non-destructive drilling (NDD) trucks to locate underground services and reinstating the road surface and line marking.

These works will occur:

  • 24 hours, on an ongoing basis until December 2019.

These activities are expected to generate periods of medium to loud noise.

Arden work site

TBM assembly and commissioning will occur at the New North Melbourne Station site until November 2019.

Large cranes will be used to lower and connect TBM gantry pieces and other equipment into the station box

These works will occur:

  • 24 hours, on an ongoing basis throughout November 2019.

This work will be undertaken at night as well as during the day and is expected to generate low levels of noise.

Ongoing site development activities including construction storage, laydown areas and modifications to existing gates and hoarding on Laurens and Arden streets.

These works will involve the intermittent closure of Laurens Street down to one lane, with traffic flow maintained in both directions.

Large cranes will be used to move and connect TBM pieces at ground level and lower them into the station box.

These works are ongoing until October 2019 and will occur overnight as well during the day.

Construction of the concrete base slab and removal of steel struts from the western end of the station box will occur where the TBM pieces will be lowered in.

These works will occur:

  • 7am to 6pm, Saturdays and Sundays until July 2019 (Strut removal works).
  • 24 hours until August 2019 (Excavation and strut installation works).

These works are expected to generate medium levels of noise.

Station box excavation, installing steel supports (struts) inside the excavated station box and base slab construction will occur until  November 2019.

These works will occur:

  • 24 hours, Monday to Saturday until mid-2019.

These activities will be undertaken at night as well as during the day and are expected to generate low to medium levels of noise
